Surprise me! [09 Mar 2012|02:32pm]

cookie_chef
What's something fun to do in central NC or along the coast? I plan frequent Date Days for me and my hubby and we're on the lookout for something new. In the past we've visited animal sanctuaries, musuems, art installations, food festivals, roadside oddities, seasonal attractions, botanical gardens/arboretums, state parks, natural wonders (i.e. sinkholes, waterfalls), aquariums, etc. Bottom line is we're up for pretty much anything. Bonus points if it is cheap and/or I can take pictures.

Nevermore Film Festival Vending Opportunity [07 Feb 2012|04:23pm]

altxchange
Nevermore Film Festival will be held at the Carolina Theatre in Durham NC on February 17-19, 2012. We are now accepting vendors. An 8 foot table space is just $100. Anyone interested in getting a space should contact Jim Carl, jim@carolinatheatre.org for more info.

Items sold by vendors in the past: Jewelry, T-shirts, artwork, clothing, posters, books, DVDs (originals only, no bootlegs) and various other items. Merchandise of a spooky/horror nature does best but almost anything is welcome.

Tailor in Raleigh? [17 Sep 2011|09:42am]

erdufylla
Hi all! I'm looking for a good tailor in the Raleigh area -- preferably somewhere near Crabtree, though I'm willing to drive a bit if they're awesome and worth it.

I've got a dress I'd like to have altered a little bit. Nothing too major -- just shortening the straps a couple of inches and taking in the waist a little bit. But there are so many tailors in the area, and they all seemed to have either mixed reviews or no reviews at all. And I'd really rather not have the dress ruined, since I need it for a wedding next week. :)

Any suggestions?

Lost Dog: Small Black Female Beagle/Chihuahua Mix [05 Jul 2011|09:20am]

anandangel
Our dog Lacey was outside at 1520 Magnolia Apartments at 9pm last night, July 4th. Fireworks went off unexpectedly and she got scared and ran away. Last seen heading towards Barbee Rd, may have gone through the woods towards 54 or 55. She's about 15 pounds, black with tan/brown on her front paws and under her chin. She is not currently wearing her collar/tags.

She's very sweet and wouldn't bite, but she is usually scared of strangers so you may need to baby talk her a little to get her to come to you.

PLEASE CALL 919-260-7428 or 704-467-2126 if you find her. REWARD AVAILABLE.

I've posted this on craigslist and several other lost pet websites, and I've called local vets and put up flyers. I've been in contact with the Animal Control people and the Animal Shelter people in Durham. If you have any suggestions for additional people/places that might be helpful, please share.

Thanks!

Karaoke! [25 May 2011|07:01pm]

rabbitica
Does anyone have recommendations for bars with karaoke nights in Carrboro/Chapel Hill/Durham on Tues., Wed. or Thurs.? My friend and I are trying to establish a standing summer karaoke date. A lot of the information I get from internet searches is outdated and requires clicking through each establishment's website to find out that nope, they don't actually have regular karaoke.

TIA!

SB-31 to make alternative medicine a felony [01 Apr 2011|09:49am]

copperbeech
[ mood | annoyed ]

Reposted with permission (yes, this is real):

If the NC Legislature has its way on Monday, non-licensed health practitioners (naturopaths, homeopaths, herbalists, aromatherapists, some midwives and others) will become felons. Important information about the bill, including a link to the bill and talking points are below. Please contact Governor Purdue's office and urge her to veto it! Her contact info is below.

Here is a link to the bill: http://www.ncleg.net/gascripts/BillLookUp/BillLookUp.pl?Session=2011++&BillID=s31

"I spoke to the Governor's office this morning. They said that after House approval it will be sent to the Governor the next day (Tuesday). The Governor will have 10 days to sign or veto. She sometimes acts quickly and sometimes not. I asked that she delay a decision on this so that people can weigh in, as this was a sleeper bill that flew under the radar until now."

Please get as many people as you can to call and email the Governor's constituent services office and urge for a veto. The contact info is:

1-800-662-7952 and governor.office@nc.gov.

We really need a strong outcry. Please pass the word/social network as best as you can.

If you are up to making two or more calls, please contact your representative and urge them to vote against the bill. You can find them here:

http://www.ncga.state.nc.us/GIS/RandR07/Representation.html

Here are some talking points:

1. SB 31, a bill to clarify the penalty for the unauthorized practice of medicine, is a horrific bill with unintended consequences. If SB31 becomes law, it will increase healthcare costs for everybody because it will shut down the option consumers currently have to seek care from alternative healthcare providers whose services are paid for out of pocket. Most alternative care providers are not covered by insurance policies, and consumers who would proactively choose to pay for healthcare services out of pocket, will suddenly be forced to find MD's and make use of their insurance thereby raising costs for all. Alternative health care consumers actually provide a much needed pressure release on the rising costs of healthcare in NC. Shutting down their access to alternative choices in care will increase health care costs in NC, and this is bad for everybody.

2. Felony charges are completely unwarranted for professionals who have been legitimately helping North Carolinians for years. The significant unemployment it could cause simply due to fear of a felony charge is not included in the bill analysis.

3. There are already laws on the books to handle any injury caused by someone impersonating a medical professional. This bill is unnecessary and grows the government bureaucracy at a time when fiscal resources are already too thin.

4. Public testimony at the House sub-committee was not taken, which is outrageous, especially given that the room was packed even though the meeting was moved with no notice.

5. This bill was under the radar and the public didn't begin to become aware of it until its final committee meeting. Public upset is growing and it is imperative that the Governor consider our concerns.

6. Please add your own story of success with a practitioner.

Here's what Diana wrote:
Dear Governor Perdue,

North Carolina Legislative Bill 31 is an appalling attempt to criminalize health practitioners who do not fall into the mainstream categories.

At a time when health care costs are skyrocketing and countless people are underinsured and unable to pay exorbitant medical bills, we need to focus on treating the cause of illness rather than just the symptoms and on helping the body to heal itself. Naturopaths, homeopaths, and herbalists offer invaluable information in aiding people on the path to improved health.

There are, of course, less than reputable practitioners and providers in any field. There are certainly medical doctors who don't honor the Hippocratic Oath and other MDs who may be honorable but are simply incompetent. I've encountered a few through the years. Even though a minority may be less reputable in complementary health care fields as well, to penalize, indeed criminalize, alternative practitioners who genuinely assist people in maintaining or improving health is unfathomable in a time of economic hardship and health crises such as this.

There are laws to deal with injuries sustained by someone impersonating a medical doctor, and law suits are also a means of addressing criminally negligent or worse situations that arise in any health care related area—whether with traditional or complementary services. We don't need to criminalize those who are valuable members of the community doing work that truly helps people.

I am a Democrat who voted for you in the last election. I hope you will honor your commitment to the well-being of the people of this State by swiftly vetoing this bill.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
Lillian D. Henderson

Great Show Tonight in Durham - Cirque Mechanics [16 Feb 2011|01:06pm]

chaotick
[ mood | bouncy ]

Our family went last night to see this acrobat/dance group at the Carolina Theater in Downtown Durham - they were really awesome and the music was good, too. And at a fraction of the cost of Cirque de Soleil - we had $ 32 balcony tickets and could see almost everything very well (unlike the pricier DPAC).

Worst part was the 1/2 hour wait to get out of the parking garage... still not sure what happened there - something about someone with a credit card??? I guess I'm going to learn to 'back my car in' like everyone else around here.

Heather Dale and Ben Deschamp performing in Cary Jan 17 [14 Jan 2011|12:08pm]

camelottreasure
Just in case you hadn't heard:

Folk artists Heather Dale and Ben Deschamps are stopping in NC to play a little House Concert at our place. If you aren't familiar with their music I urge you visit http://www.heatherdale.com/ I describe Heather's music as a blend of celtic myth and medieval history, with a unique progressive folk awesomness unto itself.

Suggested donation is $10/person at the door to help support the artists and offset some of their travel. We also invite you to bring drinks or snacks to share.

Please  RSVP on the Facebook event if you plan to come. We only have room for 30 or so people. More than that gets really cozy. Seating is limited. Be prepared to stand or sit on the floor.

Chapel Hill music-ON BANDCAMP! [09 Jan 2011|01:46pm]

chordoflife
I came across some bands I haven't heard of in the Chapel Hill scene. Maybe some of you know of them, but I didn't ( I'm more familiar with Birds and Arrows, Schooner, Love Language, and some of the better known Trekky Records bands).

Enjoy!

Horseback take krautrock and odd noise pairings to whole different worlds. A must for space rock fans!

Triangle Area Groomers? [29 Dec 2010|05:02pm]

Hi,

I have a much beloved, and typically high-strung pomeranian who needs a good hair cut and to have his nails trimmed. I wondering if anyone has any recommendations. I would love to not spend a fortune, but I also want a reputable, caring person/business.

Thank you in advance and Happy New Year!
