Where can I donate nonperishable food in Chapel Hill? (Actually, I'm willing to go out anywhere else, too) I'm sure somebody out there would appreciate Tuna Helper and canned vegetables, but as much as I appreciate my grandmother's kind gesture, it's honestly not me. (I tried to motivate myself to make some of it for my lunch today, but it's just not happening.)

What about unopened personal stuff? I know there're shelters in the area, but I'm not positive of exactly where.

I'm cleaning out my pantry and closets before I move, and this stuff'll find a much better home with somebody else than with simply being moved to another closet in a different part of the state.

http://www.foodbankcenc.org/ located in raleigh, i believe.

as for the personal items, call the orange county rape crisis center. if they don't collect them, they may know who does. 968-4647 they may also have ideas about food donations.

That's exactly what I was looking for, in both cases - thank you!

i've freecycled items like that before, and people who run small independent shelters have requested them (a couple running a women's shelter nearby took the tampons my unaware-of-birth-control mother kept shoving into my apartment)

...if you don't have any luck with the big names :)

I would try the interfaith council for social services in Carrboro. They might take some of the stuff and/or have good ideas for where to donate the rest. I think their men's shelter could benefit from personal product donations--anecdotally I've heard that the men's shelter gets shafted when it comes to donations because most of the attention and funding gets focused on women and kids.
